Abstract:

The Big Five Inventory (BFI) is one of the most widely used personality questionnaires, but very few studies have been conducted on its psychometric properties in Iranian population. This study was carried out with the aim of studying the psychometric properties of the BFI questionnaire. For this purpose, 390 university students in Tehran (210 girls and 180 boys) with an age range of 18 to 56 years (M = 27.52; SD = 8.79) were selected using the convenience sampling method and completed BFI and NEO-FFI questionnaires. Cronbach's alpha, multitrait-multimethod matrix, and confirmatory factor analysis were used to estimate the psychometric properties of the questionnaire. The result of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that 15 of the 44 items did not have a strong factor loading (higher than 0.40) on the corresponding factors and were therefore removed from the questionnaire. The fit indices showed that the Persian version of 29 questions (BFI-29) with 5 factors has a good fit with the data. The reliability analysis also showed that the range of Cronbach's alpha coefficients of the factors is from 0.70 to 0.79. The lowest Cronbach's alpha coefficient was related to agreeableness factor and the highest was related to conscientiousness. The findings from the multitrait-multimethod matrix showed that the BFI-29 questionnaire has good convergent and divergent validity with the NEO-FFI questionnaire. In general, based on the results of the present study, it can be said that the BFI-29 questionnaire has desirable psychometric properties and whenever a short tool for personality measurement is needed, this questionnaire can be used.

Abstract:

This research was performed in order to validate the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI-40) from Raskin and Terry (1988) in an Iranian population. In this cross sectional survey, 335 university students of three departments, selected in stratified sampling method, were assessed by the Narcissistic Personality Inventory-40 (NPI-40), The Neuroticism Extroversion Openness Inventory (NEO-FFI) and the Millon Clinical Multi-axial Inventory-III (MCMI-III). The concurrent validity was assessed through completing a simultaneous MCMI-III test, while the differential validity was assessed as the differential power of test between individuals who had high or low extroversion and high or low agreeableness factors. Test-retest, splitting and internal consistency coefficients were reported. There were significant correlations between NPI-40 and MCMI-III scores (a=0.83, p<0.000). The reliability of NPI-40 was proved (p=0.005). Test-retest consistency coefficient, splitting consistency coefficient and Cronbach alpha coefficient for internal consistency were estimated to be 0.72 (p<0.000), 0.75 (p<0.05) and 0.65 (p<0.05) respectively. The Goodness of Fit Index for the 7 factors of the NPI-40 has been acceptable. Conclusion: Based on the results, the NPI-40 with 7 factors is an appropriate instrument to screen narcissistic personality traits in Iranian population for pertaining researches, and is a diagnostic tool in nonclinical population.

Abstract:

Introduction: Personality is a relatively stable pattern of traits, tendencies, or attributes that partly stabilize behavior. More specifically, personality is comprised of a collection of traits or tendencies that leads to individual differences in behavior as well as behavior stability and durability over time in various situations. This study aimed at investigating the psychometric properties of HEXACO Personality Inventory in students. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive study of psychometric and validation test. A sample of 473 participants (242 females and 231 males), aged 15 to 19 years, were selected randomly among the students living in Sardasht, Iran. Results: Using Cronbach’s alpha, the validity coefficients of the overall inventory, honesty and modesty, emotionality, extraversion, adaptability, Conscientiousness, and openness to experience were obtained as 0.692, 0.480, 0.708, 0.569, 0.631, 0.548, and 0.419, respectively. Moreover, results from analysis of the main components and varimax rotation showed that the questionnaire was saturated with16 factors that together explained 59.161% of the variance. After implementation of the first-order confirmatory factor analysis, seven factors(namely emotionality, lack of self-worth, extraversion, honesty and modesty, adaptability, conscientiousness, and openness to experience) were confirmed. A significant difference was observed between the mean personality scores of male and female students. Conclusion: Findings suggest that the HEXACO Personality Inventory has satisfactory validity and can be used for evaluation of the personality of Iranian students.

Abstract:

Introduction: As narcissism has an one-dimensional approach, long questionnaires are not appropriate in clinical and research use, therefore it is necessary to use shortened questionnaires. The Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 (NPI-16) is a short self report questionnaire for assessing narcissistic characteristics in non-clinical samples. This research was performed in order to validate this questionnaire in Iran.Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional survey, 342 university students, selected in stratified sampling method, were assessed by Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 (NPI-16), Neuroticism Extroversion Openness Inventory (NEO) and Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II) in 2008. The concurrent validity was assessed through completing a simultaneous MCMI-II test, while the differential validity was assessed as the differential power of test between individuals who had high or low extroversion and high or low agreement characteristics. Retest, splitting and internal consistency coefficients were reported. Results: There was a significant correlation between NPI-16 and MCMI-II scores (a=0.77, P<0.001). The reliability of NPI-16 was proved (P=0.001). Test retest consistency coefficient, splitting consistency coefficient and Cronbach alpha coefficient for internal consistency were estimated to be 0.84 (P=0.001), 0.74 (P < 0.001) and 0.79 (P<0.001) respectively. Conclusion: Based on the results, the NPI-16 is an appropriate instrument to screen narcissistic personality traits in Iranian population for pertaining researches.

Abstract:

With regard to various concerns regarding the category of personality disorder since the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, an alternative personality disorder model is provided in the third part of DSM-5. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of DSM-5 adult Personality Inventory on the normal population. For this purpose, 278 students were selected by using multistage cluster sampling, and tested with adult DSM-5 personality inventory, Dark Triad Scale and Big Five Personality Questionnaire. The validity of the questionnaire with other scales showed eligible discriminant and convergence validity. As well as its factor structure was assessed by using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. The results of the factor analysis indicated that the DSM-5 adult Personality Inventory has five factors, check the reliability of the questionnaire using Cronbach's alpha, retest and splitting coefficient reflects the reliability of the Inventory. The inventory, has required psychometric properties in Iranian population sample, and Inventory can be used in studies in the Iranian culture.

Abstract:

Objectives: In view of the existing methodological drawbacks in the previous investigations of NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised, the present study aimed at reinvestigating the construct validity of this inventory in Iran.Method: 334 students 231 female and 98 male, 5 not specified) with a mean age of 23.1 were selected via convenience sampling from Tehran, Elm-o-Farhang and Shahid Beheshti Universities, and completed NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised. Inclined rotation and parallel analysis was used for exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results: Exploratory factor analysis resulted in the extraction of five factors, which altogether accounted for 59.25 percent of the total variance of the data. As a result of exploratory factor analysis, a noticeable number of cross-loads and wrongly loaded subscales were observed. Confirmatory factor analysis also resulted in weak to moderate fit indexes. Conclusion: Considering the results of the present study and with regard to the medium and weak alpha coefficients in the Garousi Farshi study, the primary applicability of this questionnaire in the Iranian culture is questionable. It seems that factor analysis at the level of characteristics could be helpful.

Abstract:

Objective: The aim of the present study was to identify faking responses in the Big Five personality inventory. In this study, data were collected by administering the NEO-FF short form personality inventory to students of Allameh Tabataba'i University. Methods: 748 participants in two instructed (n = 366) and honest (n = 382) groups completed the research questionnaire. In this study, the participants were randomly assigned to two groups: those who responded honestly and those with instructed responses. Results: The findings, by examining the differences in class means, the composition of the main groups, the selection threshold graphs, and the probability of confirming the answer choices by class, identified most dimensions of the two classes of samples as simulated and honest groups. Conclusion: Finally, it can be said that over the past 10 years, research on identifying faking responses has attracted considerable attention in assessments areas; however, there seems to be a relative lack of empirical studies in evaluating faking responses, apart from limited applications in simulation studies, that can accurately explain how to identify, describe and correct individual inconsistencies. Additionally, despite a few initial reports in this area, patterns of individual inconsistency are rarely reported in official reports for large-scale educational screenings such as national employment tests and psychological assessments. Therefore, statistical methods such as item response theory and factor analysis can be used to identify faking responses in employment or psychological assessment with specific goals. .
